According to the Vernon Police Officer who was at the scene, a 17-year-old was caught speeding down Tunnel Road in Vernon Ct on September 2rd, 2019. The officer clocked her in at 88mph, as she flew past his cruiser.
To get a full sense of how much trouble this young lady could potentially find herself in due to this Labor Day weekend cruise, know that Tunnel Road has speed limits that do not exceed 35mph (vernon-ct.gov). Having been clocked driving over 2.5 times the posted speed limit, she is certain to suffer suspension of her license for a time (60 days), at least according to legal information found on CT.gov.
The Law
The Connecticut DMV has several different categories on their “Mandatory Suspension” list, any of which will cost a teen their license for anywhere between 30 days to 1 full year, all of which include having to pay the $175.00 license restoration fee, coupled with whatever the court winds up charging for fines as well. Prison starts being brought up when we head into the street racing or reckless driving sections.
There are also categories given that are more serious, that result in the teen losing “Youthful Offender Status.” This means that they will be charged as an adult, and is engaged when there’s a death that occurs due to their actions behind the wheel, or leaving the scene after an accident which involves serious injury or death.
Another offense that can strip “Youthful Offender Status” from a teen driver is driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Drugs and alcohol can cost a teen their license whether they’re driving or not. Even if they’re caught on private property with alcohol, license revocation will come as a consequence among others.
Additional charges might be compiled to this particular young lady, depending on the time of day it was. Reckless driving comes to mind to couple with the speeding ticket. Did it happen past curfew? If so that’s another problem. Any drugs or alcohol involved? She’d better hope not. The initial report isn’t clear about what the teen will be facing in total.
As if this wasn’t enough trouble facing the teen, the officer also stated that she crashed her car and nearly went careening into a lake in the twisted section of Reservoir Road, just 2 weeks prior.
Between the two incidences, there is a good chance that this young lady can be facing some serious trouble. Not just her, but her parents might be looking at having to pitch in to help her cover the charges that could be piled up if she doesn’t have the income available to pay off any fines and a future license reinstatement.
It would be safe to assume- she’s going to need a lawyer.
